Doylestown, PA – Grace M. Deon, Esq. served as the judge for a mock murder trial involving local home school students from Newtown and Souderton.
The eighth grade students filled the roles of the attorneys for the prosecution and defense, as well as the defendant, witnesses and even the bailiff. In addition to Ms. Deon acting as the judge, there were volunteers (attorneys and non-attorneys) who served as jurors. The proceeding took place at the Bucks County Justice Center so the students had the opportunity to conduct the trial in an actual courtroom.
Ms. Deon commented, “The students began working on the case file in January. In addition to comprehending and analyzing a lot of information in a relatively short period of time, it was particularly impressive given the fact that the students are only eighth graders.” The competition included two rounds, requiring the students to argue both sides of the case. At the conclusion of the second round, there was an opportunity for students to receive feedback from Ms. Deon and the jurors. Ms. Deon remarked, “The poise and well-reasoned arguments by the students leads me to believe that there may in fact be a least one future trial lawyer amongst them.”
